Earthy Smell

In my childhood days , during peak summer, summer rain were days of joy. I used to run outside when I hear the subtle sound of rain falling on the earth. It was beautiful, with the best smell in the world, the Smell of Earth.

Fast forward, many years , I was sitting outside on a hot summer day. The sky was getting dark and one of the not so common bird was restless. I said , looks like it’s going to rain heavy.

And it started to rain, and rain. But it was different. The sound of the rain was louder as the water was falling on the concrete. My son asked me why it was so loud. There was no mud to be seen, the concrete tiles have taken over.

Kerala has been a victim of floods for last two years, people are suffering all over. These concrete tiles are one of the root causes as the earth is not able to absorb water. These tiles have killed billions of organisms and plants.

I hear the usual comment from people when I mention this, it’s not just me, everyone is doing the same. They forget, every land matters.

I decided, I will have these concrete tiles removed. Let me be the change.

I still kept looking for some mud around, searching for my good old childhood earthy smell. I kept looking but found only the dead earth.
